The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491) is a points tested temporary visa offering skilled professionals a pathway to live and work in designated regional areas. One of the biggest advantages of this visa is the 15 points awarded for state or territory nomination or regional family sponsorship, which can significantly improve your points score.

5 Year Stay

Allows you to stay in Australia for up to five years to contribute to regional communities.

After meeting the required work duration of three years, you can transition to permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa.

Occupation Must be on the relevant skilled occupation list.
Skills Assessment Positive assessment from the relevant authority.
Points Test Minimum of 65 points.
State/Territory Nomination You must have been nominated by a state or territory, or sponsored by an eligible family member.
Age Under 45 at the time of invitation.
English Language Competent is the minimum level, however points are only awarded for Proficient and above.
Invitation Expression of Interest (EOI) required for state or territory nominations; only invited applicants may apply.

Yes. You can include your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children in your application, either at the time of lodgement or later as subsequent entrants.
How much does the 491 visa cost?
Fees are reviewed annually by the Department of Home Affairs. As of July 2025, the visa application fees for the Subclass 491 visa starts from AUD $4,640 for the main applicant. There is no minimum income requirement for the 191 visa, you must simply be able to provide Notice of Assessments issued by the ATO for three income years for employment held in designated regional areas.
